Business Leadership: Leading With Spirit posted by admin on April 7, 2011

Leaders are made, not born. It is dangerous to think that some people are just born with a certain set of skills and that there is nothing you can do about it if you weren’t one of those things. What makes a good leader? How can you be one? These are probably just some of your questions as you strive to perfect your business leadership skills.

Again, what makes a good leader? Is it someone who is feared and commands respect? Is it someone who can make people follow his commands at once or someone who inspires others? These are the ideals when it comes to leaders – those who command respect, inspire others and simply makes it easy for other to follow him. However, what most people don’t realize is that a big aspect of great business leadership is spiritual.

Spiritual business leadership is all these things and more. It means that you are not just in touch with your mind and heart but also with your soul. It is about leading smartly but not ignoring values like morality, integrity and simple decency. It is not just about the profit anymore or the bottom line for businesses, it also means finding fulfillment and personal satisfaction in what you do and how it affects others.

Just how important is it to be in touch with your spiritual nature in business and at work?

Leaders who are in sync with their nature and accept their spirituality will probably make better, more grounded decisions as they follow what experience has taught them and what they know without ignoring their gut instinct. You’ve probably already encountered a situation wherein everything is already OK and perfect in paper but you just feel like there is something wrong with it. Did you follow that advice? Did you follow that little voice that was stopping you from pushing for it? How many times have you disregarded that and ended up regretting it later?

Business leaders who are not in tune with their spirituality are most likely to ignore that because they think that it is simply nonsense. They feel that they cannot make a decision based simply on gut feel, it must be logical and rational and as such, they move forward without even having to take note of that voice.

Spiritual business leadership though is not about simply going from one gut feel to another. It is not about being led blindly by your gut feel. What it means is that you make decisions and plans the best you could but when you make them and something just pulls you back, then stop. Stop and consider every angle since you might be missing something – you might be failing to take into account your employees, or the hours that will be lost to you spending time with your family. A good business leader should lead with spirit – making sure that decisions are for the best of everyone and not just the business itself.
